A Study on correlations Between Self-esteem, Depression, and Marital Adjustment of Infertile Women

Abstract
This study was designed to compare the self-esteem, depression and marital adjustment of infertile women with those of normal women, and to investigate the correlations selfesteem, depression and marital adjustment of infertile women.
Fifty-two infertile women from 1 university hospitals in Seoul and fifty normal women from 1 apartment in Incheon were accidentally sampled.
Data was collected from the 22nd of Mar. to the 14th of Apr. 1989, by means of self-report questionaire.
The instruments for this study were Rosenberg¢¥s self-esteem scale, Zung¢¥s self-rating depression scale and spanier¢¥s dyadic adjustment scale.
The data were analyzed by use of descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA and pearson correlation coefficient.
The results of the study were as follows;
1. The first hypothesis, "The level of self-esteem in infertile women than that in normal women is lower" was rejected.
2. The second hypothesis, "The level of depression in infertile women than that in normal women is higher" was rejected.
3. The third hypothesis, "The level of marital adjustment in infertile women than that normal women is lower" was rejected.
4. The fourth hypothesis, "In infertile women, the higher the level of self-esteem, the lower the level of depression" was accepted 1r=-.47,,p=.005).
5. The fifth hypothesis, "in infertile women, the lower the level of depression, the higher the level of marital adjustment" was accepted (r=-.43, p < .05).
6. The sixth hypothesis, "In infertile women, the higher the level of self-esteem, the higher the level of marital adjustment" was rejected
7. Relationships between general characteristics and various variables (depression,self-esteem and marital satisfaction) in infertile women were as follows:
1) There were significant differences between the duration of marriage and depression (F=5.13, p < .05).
2) But, there weren¢¥t significant differences between general characteristics and the other variables (self-esteem and marital satisfaction).
